GAME DESIGN ENGINES

Construct 2

 This video was not available

GameMaker: Studio

They look really cool graphics and designs, and better that the sploder, I think they are morre complex to program.

UNITY

There are better graphics 3D and more realistic. I would love to learn how to creat a program using unity.

Unreal Engine i
This one seems realys difficutl they are discussing a lot about codes and how to program .I do not consier myself a programer, and I find it really difficult to do so.
Clickteam Fusion i
It was not available

Stencyl i
I did love the desigsn on this one, they mlook like minecraft creations and fun dor young learners, and also they dont seem difficult to create.. I would love to learn

PlayCanvas
Il looks like Autocad which engineers  use to design. It is used to create 3d objects, and it looks a little hard to design in it, and it will take a lot of time to create things in it.

Torque 3D
It looks really realistic, i love the designs and is also 3d, I will also like to learn this one.

Craftstudio
This looks reallys realistic. I loved the colors and designs and the characters and grpahics I would love to learn to design somthing similar. I am not into shooting games, but this one looks really nice. I am nos sure I would play it, but it seems entertaining.

Juegos de Accion 2: sonic and mario

Juegos de Accion 2: Sonic and Mario

I love playing this types of games. These are my favorite. I love Mario and Sonic, I grew up playing these games, hence I love them.

I love the graphics, the music, the objective, the collection of coins. I love the characters, the adventure and the quest.  Now that I used the other game makers, I felt like creating a game similar to Marios Bros. and I did. It wa snot that complex but I loved it.

I went into the 2 first levels of Sonic and won them, on the third one that was a little bit more difficult since the enemy was flying around with a metal ball trying to get me, and he did.

COVER FRONT

COVER FRONT

I find it exciting, addicting and frustrating at some points. I love the mistery and that you have to discover what to do.It is like a mind puzzle. I got th scissors cut the cables, got inside the house, then I read the letter and fixed the pump with the leaked pipe. I got  kind of hook to open the cellar door under the chairs. That is abou it.
Upstairs, i saw a crime scene with a gun surrounded by blood.  I got frustrated because I could not open the door on the top right, it was locked and the boby pin did not open it. so i stopped playing, but I am sure I will come back to continue with the mistery,

SPLODERFEST

SPLODERFEST

I played like 10 games from my friends.I do not like the shooting games. I hate the little spaceship being attacked from everyhwhere. In addition, most games do not possess the option of  having a time limit, and I was locked in a loophole if I did not get the mission.

I did like the ones created in platform since they have like a linear way to go and play.  I do believe all games should have time limits and more instructions in order to understand what our aim is.

I still do not like how to link using these games through educational purposes.

What makes a game good?

What makes a game good?

  •  It has to engaging to `the player
  • Not too difficult , not too hard to keep gamer interested and challenge the gamer.
  • Rewards are of uttmost importance, since gamers feel they are achieving an objective
  • Have a purpose to play, a mission.
  • It has to be fun
  •  It has to be visually attactive
  • Clear instructions and rules of the games
  • Feedback must be included for the gamer to continue

3D Mission Creator

3D Mission Creator

Likes
  •  I loved the game ,the graphics were awesome and so realistic.
  • The mission was hard but it engaged me as a player.
  • Loved that there were 2 players and both of them communicated
Dislikes
  •  I hate shooting games, I dislike games where shooting is your only ay to survive haha
  • I think the instructions were not too clear, hence <i could not find the reactor to disconnect the door to win the level.

Physics

Physics game

I did not like this game. I tried to understand the purpose, but it was difficult for me to understand the aim of the game. After reading that teenagers are more able to do them since they are studying physics.
I found it a little boring and with no purpose, perhaps since I have not studied physics since college years.  On the other hand, I do think this type pf games are more aimed to educational areas, and will be better to teach any other areas, than arcade, which I am sure it is more for entertaining purposes.

SHOOTER

SHOOTER

LIKES
  •  I like the colorful graphics
  • Liked the tension of being attacked by everyone around me.
  • The rewards were put in strategic places

DISLIKES
  • I do not like violent games , I am more into the adventure type of games
  • I did not like that the handling of the ship was difficult at times.
  •  The platform where it is played is really small. There is no advancing space.

Aracade Retro

ARCADE RETRO

I already did a similr game to this one, here is the link:

  1. I like the colors and designs
  2. I loved the MArio Bros similarity
  3. I find it easy to play
  4. I find it entertaining to collect coins and earn lives.
  5. I found it was not hard to create it, although I consider myself not that creative, it was a challenge to create something that it is visually nice to play and look.

Sploder jugador: Plataformas

Sploder jugador: Plataformas

While playing this game I did like the graphics but found it a little difficult to play. The lave kept burning me and I was unable to go to the topto collect my cristals. I did not like the music. I also did not like the main characters image, it could have looked a little bit friendlier. The design was good, but the graphics were not that colorful. I like more vivid colors in video games.

Sploder: Tipos de juego

Sploder: Tipos de juego

There are 5 types of games: Platform Creator, Physics Creator, Graphic Editor, >Classic Editor, 3D Adventure creator.

I just created my account in Sploder. I logged in and tried the different types of video games creator, I like the platform creator. I think it was the easiest for me. I understood it better than the others. Some of the featured games I played, I found them boring since I could not understand what the aim of each games was.

HUmberto Cervera TEDx

  • Optimize resources, do not be a hoarder
  • Once a year eliminate things you do not use and make room for new experiences
  • Take risks, and take chances. To obtain something you need to be persistent.
  • Too easy, you get bored, the game needs to challenge you .
  • Games teach you to work collaboratively.

I agree with Humberto Cervera in many issues. Indeed in nowadays society we need to be able to work in groups and in a cooperative and collaborative way. Since more heads think better than one, and it has been shown through experience that working in groups help us solve issues in a faster way. This is because people as individuals think differently and have different solutions to offer for the same conflict.

Moreover, I agree with the fact that if a game is too easy, it becomes boring. A game needs to be challenging to entertain the gamer and engage us.

In my case I like and have a personal issue with Mario.. I need to rescue the princess and wont stop to do so until I get successful. My personal challenge .

MMORPG/MMOG

MMORPG/MMOG

To be honest I have never played  either of these games. I have usually seen them played in movies or TV shows like the Big Bang Theory, but never had the experience to do so.

I find it fascinating, how technology has advanced in the area of video games that nowadays, you can play collaboratively and with people from all around the world. I can see how the interaction with people from different countries and cultures can be engaging to the new gamer. I find it exciting to share a game with people who are not physical there next to me.

Now in my experience with MMOG, I did play Second Life for a while.  I did not find it that interesting. I mean the graphics and the ideas are good, although the times I joined Literature rooms, or any other educational rooms I got irrespectful remarks from other players. The people who engage in any type of communication with me were there to "make friends" or had hidden agendas. On the other hand, I did use it to make a team meeting in the sky. That was cool. Although I think it works better when you are not in the same classroom. Ill probably tried later, after  seing what Mr Haskell did with his class.

Tom Chatfield TED talk

Tom Chatfield TED talk

This TED talk helped me realize how my gaming is driven, especifically what motivates me into playing a certain video game. I liked how he starts analyzing the different engagement activities are reinforced by the instant reward received in several video games

I will go with Mario Bros since it is my favorite, the game is uncertain, gives rewards in the short and long term. In order to keep players interested you have the chance and option to go into the mushrooms, to get more lives or win gadgets to make your time playing the game more engaging. Additionally, you also have the chance to earn lives if you obtain 100 coins, hence you get an instant reward even if you loose the game.

So basically when creating a game it has to appeal to the gamer's emotions, by engaging them.People like to play when they are winning, and this is why to keep players engaged, the game needs to have several levels of rewards.

Playing Zelda

Playing Zelda

I have not plahed Zelda for a long time. When I was 11 i was part of an exchange program to Minnesotta, in there my hostess family had sega and we played Zelda. Since then. I had not played it.

I was great at playing Zelda, I loved the mystery and the graphics, especially when there was a rainy day and the soldiers sent me home to sleep. I felt they actually were talking to me, and made me feel important.

One of the things I mostly loved about Zelda was the map reading, since I love maps and I love to travel it made it easier to connect it to my social studies class where I was learning about directions. Right now that I am an adult I am able to notice how my class and the game were related. At that time I only cared about having  a great time while playing it.

Poker, Chinese Checkers, roll dice

Poker, Chinese Checkers, Roll Dice

I have not played these games since I was a child and they were called board games. As a kid I used to love these types of games, playing in groups and having the fun and excitement invade us, it was an awesome time. We used to play these games when we were on vacation and some of my friends went to my parents house at the beach.

Nowadays I have not have the time, or the eagerness to play these games. Since my son is 7, my only board game context has changed into buying and playing games for him. I guess that when he grows up I will be buying these games.

Right now I spent  5 minutes playing Poker, Chinese Checkers and Roll Dice. I have never been a fan of Poker, so I did not enjoy it. At points it seemed boring for me. The same exact thing happened while playing Chinese Checkers, I got bored. Again, I find computer video games not as much fun as the console games. I think it has to do with the fact that since childhood I had a console.

Now these video games may not be great to play for me, but they will be useful for teaching. I would use it to teach probabilities, to give directions, and just math exercises.

Peasants quest

PEASANTS QUEST

I have never played this game before. I read it is really antique. I could notice this by the images, graphics and the lack on instructions. As other video games played in this course, most of the old games were played without many instructions, and they require for you to play and investigate what to do.

I again got frustrated, since I like to do things quickly and I am a little impatient, this game seems boring for me. I tried all the possible commands the game gave me, and most of them were used incorrect. Finally I got killed, but I did not get the urge to play it again.

I am more of a console user more than the computer one, probably that is why I did not get engage to this type of game.

Gamification Star Trek

Gamification Star Trek

Personally I am not a Star Trek fan.. at all. I do love the idea of creating and using a game to engage students attention . The sole idea of learning through playing , it becomes an attractive idea to the students . I don't know whether the teacher should have used another program or just give it a general title such as: Space Warriors or Space-students.

Now, here in Ecuador elementary schools have ban the use of cellphones in the institutions because of government policies. Therefore, in our context it will be impossible to use cellphones at least in elementary school.

I do enjoy to have a teacher change the traditional classroom centered on the teacher and turn it in, in a student centered classroom.

The Oregon Trail

THE OREGON TRAIL

The Oregon Trail and I have a long story. Since I was in elementary school we played The Oregon Trail and we learned about American History, new vocabulary, and how people used to live on those days.

By playing this game, we learned about decision making, although at that age I did not acknowledge it. I just played for fun, and to win. We made it a competitive environment and we learned from our mistakes.

In addition since, my school is Colegio Americano, we learned about the American Culture, and the history was involved in it.

Of course, nowadays after playing it, I find the graphics really old fashioned, but the sentiment I have towards it, is linked to the memories of my childhood, hence I still like it!!

Playing Zork

Playing Zork

I started playing Zork, and I felt frustrated. I did not know what to do, how to play it or which commands to use. The instructions were not that clear, and since the commands saved in the game were not that broad, it made it difficult to write the proper commands.

I tried to advance as much as I could but my lack of patience made me drop the game. The teacher made me realize people in the past played like this, and they had to communicate to learn how to  play the game.

Juegos de simulaciòn 1

Juegos de simulaciòn 1

I just finished playing with Sim CIty Flash. I really liked it a lot. It was awesome to créate and build my own city.I felt like the president or mayor of the city. I needed to know what were my people`s needs and give them to them.

However, the instructions were not that clear for me, I had to play around to understand the game, even after Reading the instructions twice.

I am going to advice the business teachers to use this game for their class.

Juegos de Acciòn

Juegos de Acción

As I played both of them, I could spot several differences such as in graphics, scenarios, music and aim.
Playing through the computer, was difficult, I am not used to it anymore. My time reaction was extremely poor, and I failed severa times. I am used now in using a console and playing with remote controls.

Even though Glaga is the old game, it was really difficult for me because the spaceships attacked me in a high speed way haha

MY REFLECTION ON PAUL ANDERSON`S TED TALK ON VIDEO GAMES

Nowadays is really hard to include games in the classroom. I am an IB teacher for Literature and Theory of Knowledge, and we have a huge syllabus to cover in two years, and it seems impossible to include games in the classroom. I am not saying they are bad, I actually love and enjoy playing games, but with books, and making students read a book it seems a difficult task to accomplish through games.
I do believe the grade is of uttmost importance to the kids and parents nowadays, and since the educational system requires a grade, that is an issue that is not going to change. The educational systems are doomed to fail since everything revolves around a simple grade. This can be a harmful issue for students`self esteem. We need to ,of course, include gaming in the clases, but some other policies need to change like including  an specific criteria on games, to motivate students and kids to use and play them.
Everybody enjoys games, even us, who are currently going through our masters degree. We need to maje changes in some policies like giving less teaching hours to the teachers, so we can have more time to plan and créate games. The same goes to the criterion, we now have a grade for individul and group works, homework and quizzes, but what about a gaming criteria??

Just a thought...

Understanding Games
  1. The rules should be clear for all players. Instructions should be clear and explain the aim of the game.
  2.   Interactivity, a gamer
  3. Uncertainty of who is going to win, to build up expectation.
  4. simulation of real life event `ping pong
  5.  More relalistic images create   bigger excitement to the gamer.
  6. Rules and representations are related
  7. Principle of variation used to simulate sport games.

Reflexiòn de Gráficos de películas y videojuegos

I watched the video and it made me reminisce about the good old times in gaming. Since I studied in Colegio Americano, the American Culture was involved in all the subjects, and that included the Computer class. In my case, this class was my favorite, since I love computers and gaming.

Some of the videos I recognize were: Streetfighter, Mario Kart, Pong, Space Invaders, Galaxian, Pacman, Asteroids, Donkey Kong, and New Mario Bros. Since early childhood in our Computer classes, whenever we finished early we had time to play this games. Of course, I have seen how video games have develop through the years. Starting with the games played in computers, which were made of black and white graphics, going to our first console which was the Atari, Me and my brothers played the space games and loved how we could get to fight and explode asteroids. Right now I am still playing with mt husband and 7 year old son Mario Bros.

If I had to choose my favorites I would still choose Mario Bros. I have played it since I was 10. I love all the characters and the story and the fight against Koopa. Whenever I pass to a next level I felt I had accomplish something in my life. Although I hae never finish the game and that is my frustration. Right now I have "motivated" my son into liking Marios Bros, and he is now my partner in crime, We are currently going through the last level, level 8, it has been an odissey, but it will be awesome to achieve this with my son.
